1997 La Liga ~ Barcelona vs Real Madrid (Full Classic Match)

Download full classic match Barcelona vs Real Madrid 1996-7The real reason El Clasico is the greatest club match in the world is because no other game features as many brilliant players all together on the same field.

The 1996/97 edition, played in the Camp Nou, was no exception to that rule. In response to a poor 1995/96 season, both Barcelona (3rd in La Liga) and Real Madrid (6th in La Liga – how unthinkable today), spent heavily over the summer, reinforcing their squads with big name players.

Spearheading Bobby Robson’s joyous Barcelona side is a 20 year old Ronaldo. Slim, fast, skilled and a amazing finisher, Ronaldo is already the world’s best player. And he’s surrounded by creative quality: Guardiola, De La Peña, Figo, Giovani and Luis Enrique.

But as always, Real Madrid’s collection of superstars forms just as impressive a list: Hierro, Roberto Carlos, Redondo, Seedorf, Raul, Mijatovic, Suker. And with Fabio Capello as coach, there were no doubts about the defensive strength of this side.

2003 Champions League Quarter-Final ~ Manchester United vs Real Madrid (Full Classic Match)

Download full match Manchester United vs Real Madrid 2003There was a time when the word Galacticos only had positive connotations. When it wasn’t yet dripping with irony and the image of expensive failure.

When Zidane, Raul, Figo, Makelele, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo, all dressed in white, appeared unstoppable.

Indeed, in 2002, Real Madrid had won the Champions League. For the 2002/03 edition, they were overwhelming favourites to triumph again.

But Manchester United wouldn’t be Manchester United if they were just going to accept defeat. Even if they had lost the first game 3-1 in the Bernabeu, there was always a chance of a turn around on Old Trafford. Even with David Beckham, in the peak of his ability, limited to a second half cameo.

1983 La Liga ~ FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid (Full Classic Match)

Download full game Barcelona Real Madrid 1982/83The glory days of Kubala and Suarez had become a faint memory by 1983. Since 1960, the only Catalan Liga triumph had been that one Cruyff-inspired 1973/74 campaign. The other 21 seasons had been a long, painful stretch of failure.

Madrid, meanwhile, had comfortably dominated Spanish football in those years, even if their grip on European football had loosened compared to the 50′s.

But now Barcelona had a new star player. The next man to lift them beyond their hated rivals from the capital – at least, that’s what the fans hoped for. Diego Armando Maradona. With him in the starring role, and with Bernd Schuster orchestrating play, perhaps Madrid could finally be toppled.

Indeed, this Real Madrid, with Camacho, Juanito, Stielike and Santillana as the most eyecatching figures, looked beatable.

The game was also a battle between two Argentines. Coaching Barcelona was Cesar Luis Menotti. Real’s trainer was none other than Alfredo di Stefano.

2009 La Liga ~ Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona (Full Classic Match)

Download the full Clasico Barcelona Real Madrid 2009 6-2The pinnacle of Pep Guardiola’s first season as Barcelona coach, and a game that will surely be remembered for ages to come.

After winning the Champions League in 2006, Barcelona thought they could keep dominating world football with their team built around star player Ronaldinho. But the best player in the world increasingly lost his motivation, and with it, his fitness and his form. Over the next two seasons, the team slowly disintegrated, and the soft hand of coach Rijkaard could do nothing to prevent it.

In the summer of 2008, Rijkaard was at last fired, with former Dream Team captain Pep Guardiola assigned as his replacement. Pep immediately offloaded Ronaldinho and Deco, choosing instead to make Lionel Messi the grand star of the team, with the reliable and disciplined Xavi and Iniesta as playmakers. It worked wonders, as Barcelona quickly started playing a brand of football superior even to that played by Rijkaard’s Barcelona in its best days.

But on 2 May 2009, nothing yet had been won. Hiddink’s Chelsea had proved an incredibly tough opponent in the first leg of the Champions League Semi-final, and in La Liga Real Madrid – with a revitilized Raul and an unstoppable Arjen Robben – had been winning match after match.

The week of truth had arrived, with two huge challenges in four days awaiting Barcelona in first the Santiago Bernabeu and then on Stamford Bridge. This was the week where Barcelona could write history.

Starting with El Clasico.

Michael Laudrup

Before Zidane popularized Le Roulette, before Iniesta popularized La Croqueta and before Ronaldinho popularized the no-look pass, Michael Laudrup was regularly fooling opponents with any of the above mentioned tricks. With his vision, intelligence, technique and dribbling skills, Laudrup is without question one of the finest European players of all time.

1989 European Cup Semi-Final ~ AC Milan vs Real Madrid (Full Classic Match)

The monopoly on European football that Barcelona enjoys today, mirrors the iron grip AC Milan had over Europe in the late 80′s. The one game that demonstrates this more than anything is the second leg of the 1989 European Cup Semi-Final. The first leg had ended in 1-1, and now the two teams moved the battlefield to Milan’s San Siro stadium. It was here that Sacchi’s Milan gave a master class in modern football. Real Madrid could count on greats such as Hugo Sanchez, Emilio Butragueño and Bernd Schuster, but they proved no match for a rampant Milan, whose Italian core of Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini, Ancelotti and Donadoni was enhanced by the three greatest Dutchmen of their era: Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten.

Line-ups:

AC Milan
Galli – Tassotti, Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini – Donadoni, Colombo, Rijkaard, Ancelotti – Gullit, Van Basten
Coach: Arrigo Sacchi

Real Madrid
Buyo – Llorente, Sanchis, Chendo, Gordillo – Gallego, Schuster, Vazquez, Michel – Butragueño, Sanchez
Coach: Leo Beenhakker
