2005 Champions League Round of 16 ~ Chelsea vs Barcelona (Full Classic Match)

Barcelona vs Chelsea 2005This is the return game of the tie that lay the seeds for the rivalry that still dominates European football: Mourinho vs Barcelona.

José Mourinho had won the Champions League with FC Porto in 2004 and was quickly snapped up by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to head his new project. Receiving the reigns over one of the most expensive collection of players in history, Mourinho instilled a strong discipline and excellent organization that made Chelsea the best team in England.

But Abramovich wanted more than just domestic glory. His real aim was winning the Champions League. Small problem: Chelsea’s first obstacle in the KO phase of that tournament was the best footballing side in Europe: FC Barcelona.

Starring Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Deco, Barcelona impressed by playing extremely attacking football spiced with Ronaldinho’s incomparable wizardry.

Yet, in the first leg of the tie, Chelsea surprisingly managed to grab the lead in the Camp Nou. The Londoners proceeded to defend it with all their might as Barcelona attacked and attacked. The Catalans were ultimately rewarded for their efforts thanks to a goal and assist from the unlikely Maxi Lopez: 2-1.

Mourinho, not for the last time, felt stolen. Robbed by the referee Anders Frisk who had sent off Didier Drogba. ‘The Special One’ started the type of drama that would accompany many of his games with Barcelona, by accusing Rijkaard of meeting with Frisk during half-time.

But for all the discussion that followed in the media, the 2-1 defeat couldn’t be erased. It meant Chelsea had to attack on Stamford Bridge.

And attack they would. A game with so much drama, goals, magic and tension that it’s unquestionably one of the all-time classics in the Champions League.

Nice! But the first half is “temporarily unavailable” according to megaupload.

Yes, that’s a typical Megaupload issue. Sometimes refreshing a few times helps, but it can also take a day before it becomes available.

At the end of the match Terry said that Ronaldinho scored a lucky goal.
So disrespectful, I’m glad that fool will never win a CL.
